Sketchbook

Sometimes when I'm reading, a sentence will
generate an image in my mind. Other times,
I come across an image and a sentence pops
into my head!

It happened the latter way, when I
was flipping through a book of bird illustrations.
I loved this wild-eyed bird looking down her beak.
But I thought it would be much more amusing if
I performed a little surgery and transplanted the
little dearie's head to a classical lady's body. Now
I can just see some curtains that need to go with
this portrait. And who knows what else? Stay tuned.
I never know where I'm going 'til I get there. That's
the fun of collage.

Should she go or should she stay? It all has to do with timing. The ultimate question is, How do we know when the time is right?

IF- Flying

Detail

Detail
SOLD

When I saw that the theme for Illustration Friday was "flying", this collage immediately came to mind. I created this last year, but it remains one of my favorites, and in fact, I incorporated the flying dog into my logo. Although I thought I had nothing swirling around in my brain as I assembled this piece, when I look at it now, it seems to incorporate a state of mind I would love to embrace perpetually: the imagination and spontaneity of youth, with the companionship of my loyal and protective friends hovering near me!

Saucer Dog

12" X 9" Mixed media on Canvas
$195 plus $10 S/H = $205

Gadzooks - it's a dog in a spaceship. Although
it's difficult to see in this photo,
the phrase "Gadzooks B2-2" is
imprinted in the center square on the
helmet. It's actually the name of
a paint chip. Wouldn't that be
a great job - naming paint chips? This
adventurous pooch has flown into the
Doggie Galaxy of Delight: bones, balls,
squirrels, and fine Italian Shoes.

This collage is one of a kind, composed of
various cutouts including reproductions of
star maps, vintage toys and original
illustrations on a painted canvas panel.
It is unframed with painted sides.

ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY - Worry

the other 4th grade teachers out there who ask their
students to write that dreaded back-to-school essay:
"What I Did During My Summer Vacation".
